The Racing Integrity Commissioner is an independent statutory officer, appointed by the Governor in Council, under the Racing Act 1958 (Vic).
Mr Sal Perna AM was appointed as Victoria’s inaugural Racing Integrity Commissioner on 1 March 2010. His appointment has been extended on four occasions with his current appointment expiring in 2021.
Mr Perna's career included 20 years with Victoria Police, reaching Commissioned Officer rank and twice serving in the Homicide Squad. He was commended of four occasions, awarded the National Medal in 1990 and the Police Service Medal in 2014. His corporate experience includes 12 years as the head of Australia Post's Corporate Security Group and over three years as the Director, Corporate Security at Telstra. In 2007 he founded and became the Managing Director of Calibre International Pty Ltd, a specialist security risk and management consultancy focused on corporate clients. In this role, Mr Perna was the architect of Tennis Australia's Anti-Corruption Program for the Australian Open and assisted the Australian Football League (AFL) in the development of their integrity assurance program.
Mr Perna’s professional affiliations and memberships include being a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and founding member of the Australian Institute of Professional Investigators.
Mr Perna is a Director of the Independent Supervisory Board for the Global Tennis integrity Unit and a Board Member of the National Basketball league (NBL). He is the former Chairman and Honorary Life Member of Crime Stoppers (Vic), a long-serving former Member of the AFL Victoria Tribunal, ex- Chief Commissioner's representative and ex- Deputy Chairman of the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, former Panel Chair of the Melbourne Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation and former mentor on the Melbourne Lord Mayor’s Charitable Foundation's Youth in Philanthropy Program, and the Honorary Chairman and co-founder of SecMan (Forum of Australian Corporate Security Executives).
Mr Perna has an Associate Diploma in Criminal Justice Administration, an Advanced Diploma in Fraud Control management, a Certificate IV in Fraud Investigation and is a Graduate of the Australian Police Officers College, Manly, NSW. He is also a life Governor of the Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne.
Mr Perna was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2019 Queens Birthday Honours.
